2017 BMC Teamelite 03 SLX/XT Mountain Bike

General Information

Finding the right companion for your first cross-country adventures has gotten easy. The BMC Teamelite 03 is pining to bring the saddle for you to sling your legs over on your first rodeo.

The 03 is the fruit of BMC transferring the genius of their World-Cup Teamelite01 bike to triple-butted aluminum tubing. Aluminum is a highly-evolved metal, great for cycling. It’s durable, light and relatively inexpensive, the only limitation is manipulation. But BMC solved that problem with hydroforming. Now aluminum tubes can be put into shapes that mimic those that can be fabricated out of carbon-fiber. The benefit is that the riding characteristics can be almost as precisely tuned in al'. So with this bike, you get something that is light, stiff for power transfer and steering, and vertically compliant for smoothing out the ride.

As you see throughout the BMC line-up, the company believes in versatility. You’ve got one bike and you want it to do as much as possible, in as wide a variety of conditions as possible. This is what they were thinking with the Teamelite. It climbs well, it descends well, it handles bumps well, it rides smooth well, and it takes everything in between with equal savoir faire.

Durability should not be minimized. And aluminum makes this bike durable. Crashing can be tough on gear. But it’s a fact of life, and early on, crashing is often a constant. Embrace it. Plan for it. You need a bike that can resist rocks, and trees, as well as your most vicious sprints.

Big wheels roll better. For some manufacturers, adjusting geometry for 29ers was hard. BMC studied the problem, and nailed it. Short chainstays and low bottom bracket keep the wheel close and the weight close to the ground. The result is better power transfer and greater stability. Regardless of the direction you’re traveling, up or down, these two features are a tremendous benefit.

On the simplification front, BMC has gone for a few more common standards on the Teamelite 03. The bottom bracket is English-threaded and 73mm wide. The head tube is designed for a straight 1 1/8” steerer. And because you might be going deeper, the natural-born postmount for the rear brake is designed for 160mm rotors, though it can be set for 185mm rotors as well.

The BMC Teamelite 03 is a deal. More importantly, it rides great today, it will ride great tomorrow, and if you want to upgrade your ride, the frame will still be worthy if you choose to dress it in fancier parts.
