2017 BMC Sportelite APS Deore Mountain Bike (Sportelite APS Deore Mountain Bike)

General Information

BMC puts out their Sportelite APS Deore Bike as a gateway drug. They’ve built this entry-level full-suspension has the same rear-end design as their Fourstroke, Speedfox, and Trailfox platforms. It’s their Advanced Pivot System (APS) with 100mm of travel. And it’s combined with a 100mm suspension upfront and 650b wheels.

The wheels are smaller than you’ll find on most of the BMC line for a reason. They fear 29er wheels might be a bit intimidating for new mountain bikers. It’s easier to feel in control and on top of the bike with the smaller wheels and that’s what they want you to sense.

The frame is welded and formed aluminum, both for the front and rear triangles. Light, durable, and inexpensive to fabricate. The fork is the RockShox Recon, a 32mm-stanchioned bump controller with both lockout and external rebound controls. It accepts traditional quick-release front wheels. For that matter, so does the rear end.

Most of the component spec comes from Shimano. A XT rear derailleur is the high-zoot offering, while the less-expensive Deore is pretty much everywhere else. That includes the 38/24 double-ring crank, the front derailleur, the shifters, and the 11-36 ten-speed cassette. Deore hydraulic brakes stop 160mm rotors.

The wheels are built by BMC, with Deore hubs and Alex 32-hole rims. The Alex MD19 is both eyeleted and double-walled for maximum pounding resistance. They’re built for abuse, for the kind of people who don’t necessarily know how to ride over rocks and roots and rubble. The rims are covered in Continental Tires, with the Race King up front, X-King Performance in the rear, both 2.2” wide.

When you’re looking for your first full-suspension mountain bike, take advantage of the fact BMC wants you to get hooked. This Sportelite APS Deore Bike has the manners of a carbon-fiber full-suspension XC race rig for a song.

2017 BMC Teamelite 01 XTR Di2 Mountain Bike (Teamelite 01 XTR Di2 Mountain Bike)

General Information

BMC has long figured that softening up a hardtail makes it faster without adding the complexity and weight of pivoted full-suspension design. With their Teamelite01 frame, they bring Micro Travel Technology (MTT) to the table, to provide even more compliance and shock absorption to an incredibly efficient, superlight frame.

BMC has the advantage of a World Cup-dominating squad to rely on for suggestions and feedback. Because climbing is such an important part of mountain biking, riders generally prefer the lightest frame they can ride. A rigid frame can save a kilogram over a full-suspension model. The limitation is the vertical rigidity. Light often is a synonym for back-breakingly and wheel chatteringly stiff.

But the team wanted to keep the low weight of a rigid frame, but add compliance. The frame had to keep its lateral rigidity as well for power transfer. The stays were already thin and flattened in the vertical plane. So they needed more.

The big change happens where the seatstays join the seat tube. There, you’ll find a damper between the top of the stays and the frame. The damper slides on bushings that cover two hex-head bolts. Each of these elements is important as the frame comes with three different dampers to tune the compliance you experience o the trail. This is MTT, and it brings 15mm of plush to your ride. Now you can get the tire pressure low for grip, but not too low, for the compliance. The frame, and the BMC carbon compliancepost (with 3mm of offset), add damping, comfort, and yes, efficiency to your ride.

The cost of this technology, which translates into added speed on the trail, is 90g. Taking the frame from 990g up to 1080g. But, as with the 29er wheels this bike runs, the added compliance means you have an easier time rolling over the rough stuff.

The geometry didn’t change from the old Teamelite: no reason to change what works. It’s a nimble 29er, which doesn’t feel like the wheels are unwieldy. The lateral stiffness is the same, so they can charge over hills as easily.

BMC did more to keep the bike on the front of tech advances. The rear end is now designed for 12x142mm thru-axles. The cables run internally, and BMC has applied their DTI, Dual Transmission Integration (electronic or mechanical), to the runs. Plugs and stops are included, and if you go electronic, you run the battery inside the included BMC compliancepost.

The bike features the BB92 bottom bracket standard for maximum design flexibility and drivetrain stiffness. It’s protected by an integrated chain catcher. There’s a chain suck plate behind it. Lateral stiffness is enhanced by the 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” tapered headset. They recommend a fork with 100mm of travel. The rear brake mounts on their natural-born postmount system, which accommodates 140-160mm rotors.

BMC also expanded the size options for the Teamelite line. There are five sizes instead of the old three.

The BMC Teamelite 01 Frameset gives you full suspension, World Cup performance with a rigid frame.

2017 BMC Teamelite 02 Deore/SLX Mountain Bike (Teamelite 02 Deore/SLX Mountain Bike)

General Information

The BMC Teamelite 02 is the Teamelite01 simplified. That is, it takes the same geometry, the same tube shapes, and most of the same carbon, with only one change. The MTT damper is taken off. The result is a frame that weighs only 70g more than the Teamelite01, 1150g, and provides a ride that matches the efficiency with a more efficient cash outlay. Cool trick.

BMC likes balance and versatility. They’re assuming you probably have only one bike, and that bike needs to be able to handle a huge variety of conditions. Their home is mountainous, so they’re expecting slow, grinding ascents, and supersonic descents. As a result, the bike is efficient, so all your power goes into turning the rear wheel, and it is comfortable, so you have control over rough terrain.

BMC likes big wheels. They roll better. The advantage is both on smooth roads and rocky runs. And their BWC, Big Wheel Concept, is such that the short chainstays, 429mm, tuck the wheel up underneath the rider, which adds snap and agility.

The frame is more vertically compliant than the previous iteration, thanks to the new shaping of the seat and chain stays, and flattened top tube. Here, BMC applied lessons learned on the SLR01 road bike platform along with a 12 x142mm thru-axle and BB92 bottom bracket standard to achieve rock-like rigidity in the lateral plane, with plenty of give in the vertical. BMC is always looking for increased efficiency, and delivers.

That efficiency can also be found in the front end. The taper for the steerer is 1 1/8” to 1 1/2”. You have the slender diameter at the top for the ease of finding stems. The fat diameter at the bottom is to resist the torsional forces that the fork deals with.

Conversion is something BMC likes to offer. The cable runs are internal through the frame, and they’ve been redesigned according to BMC’s DTI, Dual Transmission Integration concept. Yes, this bike comes with a cable-actuated rear derailleur, but the cable for the front derailleur can easily be installed, and both can be pulled for electronic shifting if and when you have the desire to go that way.

BMC supplies the frame with seat clamp, BMC seatpost, as well as an integrated chain catcher and anti-chainsuck plate, to better protect your precious carbon from the errant drop and stuck chain. The rear brake is mounted via their natural-born postmount, which is designed for 140mm rotors, but can easily be set up for 160mm.

The BMC Teamelite 02 is a cross-country machine bred to expand the definition of hardtail.

2016 BMC Speedfox 02 XT Mountain Bike (Speedfox 02 XT Mountain Bike)

General Information

The Speedfox is a tool for enjoying the widest variety of riding as possible with a single bike. The BMC Speedfox 02 XT Bike provides the range, and the build when matched with the frameset offers both high performance and value.

Shimano Deore XT fills the niche of the Japanese component giant's mountain bike offerings that Ultegra fills on the road. They're great no-nonsense parts that eschew flash for practicality, coming in at almost identical performance and weight of the top-shelf stuff, but at a much better price. XT covers all of the components. The 34/24 double-ring crank, the 11-40 eleven-speed cassette, chain, front derailleur, Shadow+ rear derailleur, and disc brakes. The brakes themselves are the XT Trail version, which offers more stopping power and better heat dissipation thanks to the IceTech cooling fins on the pads.

Wheels tell you much about what a bike is supposed to do. The IceTech180mm rotors, front and rear reveal that this bike can go steep and fast, but probably won't be ideal for the most extreme end of all mountain riding. The DT Swiss M1700 Spline wheels are durable and at a competitive weight. The tires, are brought to you by Onza. Specifically, the Canis C3 front and Ibex FRC120 rear 2.25 tires. Light, supple casing up front with a tougher freeride-friendly casing in the rear. This is a grippy set of rubber, with just the right amount of protection. The wheels can be converted to tubeless when you're ready. And the conversion pieces you need come with.

The suspension comes from Fox. It’s essentially a matched pair. The shock is Fox's Float Performance Series with the three-position DPS damper. The three settings are open, medium, and firm, and can be controlled on the ride via a handlebar-mounted remote. The fork is the matching 34 Float Performance Series, also with a remote. 130mm in front, 130mm in back, and easily tunable on the trail. It's comfort, it's margin of error, it's efficiency all rolled together. Front and rear thru-axles add considerable lateral stiffness to the package, allowing your bike to track better more easily no matter how hard you're thrashing it.

In the middle of it all resides the Speedfox 02 frame. Carbon-fiber front triangle, same as you'll find on the Speedfox 01, with a welded, triple-butted aluminum rear, which provides considerable savings with minimal weight added. Adds a measure of durability as well. Joining the two are BMC's Advanced Pivot System, a sophisticated linkage that keeps pedaling moving you forward and suspension keeping your wheel on the ground. It's also easy to adjust, thanks to sag indicators etched onto the rocker arm. And if you need more adjustment, the RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post under the Fizik Gobi M7 saddle is there to help. And cabled internally to keep the clean look.

When put all together, the BMC Speedfox 02 XT Bike provides lots of ride for its brief.

2017 BMC Fourstroke 01 XT Mountain Bike (Fourstroke 01 XT Mountain Bike)

General Information

BMC’s Fourstroke 01 is a full-suspension cross-country bike that you’ll be as happy to take up the mountain as down. At 2040g for the frame, including all the hardware, it’s about as light as you can have a full-suspension bike, and have it still do its job.

The job it is designed for is to carry BMC pro riders to victory in the most demanding cross-country races in the world. And it has succeeded at its mission.

The Fourstroke 01 is the rare 29er full-suspension bike that competes at basically every World Cup event. The bike is light enough to compete with hard tails and the BWC helps position the wheels in such a way that they’re never a liability.

Weight is minimized thanks to generous use of carbon-fiber. Both the frame and the rear end are made of the stuff. As is BMC’s wont, they’ve not only shaped the tubes, but controlled the layup to maximize torsional stiffness and vertical compliance. You see it in how the top and down tubes are flattened, with more material aligned horizontally than vertically. You see it in the 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” tapered head tube. You see it in the BB92 bottom bracket.

BWC, Big Wheel Concept, is the first point of thinking. This is BMC re-thinking geometry to maximize the benefits of 29ers while minimizing any negatives. The result is an agile climber that is as comfortable picking lines while crawling uphill as it is ripping up an open descent. The keys are lower bottom bracket, longer top tube, shorter head tube, and more relaxed head angle.

APS, Advanced Pivot System, is how they isolate the pedaling inputs from the trail-created inputs. The suspension is active whether you're pedaling or coasting. And to tune it perfectly, you just sit on the bike and look down at the swing arm to find the Initial Load Indicator. Machined and painted lines on the arm that allow you to figure out where neutral is, and then tune for firm or soft. The linkage is machined and moves on oversized pivots to make sure there’s no slop laterally, and the vertical movement is as smooth as can be.

Suspension elements are essential to the perfect working of the frame, and BMC has partnered with Fox to provides their World Cup-ready bumpeater. The shock gives you 100mm of travel, in a very tunable Float DPS with Kashima coating to remain as friction-free as possible. It has a CTD, Climb Trail Descend, damper that you can adjust on the fly.

The frame is also set up with lots of classic BMC features. Natural-born postmount is how you mount the rear brake. The threaded inserts are replaceable. The standard position is set up for 160mm rotors, but can be adjusted for 185mm rotors. There’s a chain guard atop the bottom bracket, and an anti-chainsuck plate on the right chainstay. The cables get routed under the downtube, where they can easily be serviced. The frame also comes with a set clamp. You provide the post. The frame is set up for internal routing of a dropper post, should you choose to go that way.

The BMC Fourstroke 01 is a World Cup-ready full-suspension cross-country bike that not only outperforms hardtails and full-suspension rigs, but takes you into a realm where anything seems rideable.

When you look at the BMC Speedfox 02, you’re looking at the front triangle of the Speedfox 01, with a rear triangle of formed, welded, triple-butted aluminum. It raises the weight, improves durability and drops cost.

Joining the two triangles is a sophisticated linkage system, BMC's Advanced Pivot System, which keeps the suspension active and responding to the trail inputs no matter whether or not you're pedaling, nor how hard. The linkages are machined aluminum and pivoting on oversized bearings. The pivots are smooth to make sure nothing locks up in stiction, and the size means there’s no lateral slop when new, and none down the trail. The shock is Fox’s Float DPS, with three-position remote damper. Locked, controlled, and loose are easy to switch on the fly. 130mm of squish front and rear. Frame weight goes up to 2790g: a worthwhile compromise to get the performance gains provided.

With the rear suspension, there’s a built-in sag indicator on the swingarm. It is as easy to adjust as eyeballing and dialing.

The geometry takes its shape from BMC employing their Big Wheel Concept and tweaking it for trail riding. In this case, trail means everything from cross-country to all mountain, a bike that really gets at the heart of what it means to just go out and ride what you find. It is designed to be scooty and stable, adept at the slow and fast. This is a bike for the person who doesn’t need to race, but could dabble, who likes to ride hard up and down the mountain, but doesn’t want to rely on lifts. It’s an all trails are open kind of bike.

Because everyone wants their bike to really roll, BMC employs their BWC to make 29er wheels come to life. BWC is Big Wheel Concept, and it’s how BMC took the bigger hoops and make the resulting bike as agile as a 26er. Long top tube, slack head angle, low bottom bracket, short stays keep you in control of the front wheel, the center of gravity low and the rear wheel tucked in behind.

As it typical of BMC, there are lots of smart built-ins. The head tube is designed for 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer tubes. There’s a chain guide over the BB92 bottom bracket shell, and an anti chainsuck plate on the right chainstay. There’s a under the chainstay chain guide as well and a BMC-designed chain-slap protector as well. The seat clamp comes with, as does the 142x12mm rear axle. They’ve designed cable routing to be internal for derailleurs, brake, and seatpost. They’ve deployed their Natural-Born postmounts for the brake, with replaceable threaded inserts and accommodating 180mm to 203mm rotors.

The BMC Speedfox 02 balances performance and price so you can find the balance of exhilaration and utility out on the trail.

2017 BMC Trailfox 03 X1 Mountain Bike (Trailfox 03 X1 Mountain Bike)

General Information

Aluminum frame, SRAM X1 drivetrain, Shimano SLX brake, the BMC Trailfox 03 X1 Bike is the bike that packages BMC’s offroad mastery of big, rough mountains in a way that anybody can swing a leg over.

Trail access is the goal. For one, it's an enduro bike that climbs like a sprightly XC rig. For another, the build is designed to get you out the door for the least impact on your wallet. And, you can take this wherever you go, and be ready, willing, and able to take on all the action that daylight allows.

Let's tackle the second item first. The 03 takes the design of the Trailfox 01 and executes it in triple-butted, hydroformed aluminum. BMC takes all those shapes and either gets them exactly the same, or as close as possible given the constraints of the material and hydroforming technology. Yes, it's a bit heavier, but it is also much less expensive and more durable.

It has all the manners of the 01. Thanks to the Big Wheel Concept, low bottom bracket, short stays, long top tube, short head tube, it climbs like few 29ers. And thanks those same features plus a shallow head tube angle, it descends like nobody's business. BMC's Advanced Pivot System, APS, sets you up so you can pedal and still have an active suspension. The linkage helps separate pedal-induced forces from trail-induced forces. And you have 150mm of travel, with a Cane Creek Inline DB Air R shock presiding over the controls.

The gearing is SRAM’s X1. You start with the X1 crank with a 30-tooth chainring. Then the X1 X-Horizon rear derailleur shifts over a 10-42 eleven-speed cassette.

Stopping is courtesy of Shimano’s SLX hydraulic calipers. They stop 203mm rotors secured to BMC-built wheels. These feature SRAMS MTH-716 hubs and DT Swiss’ E512 rims. BMC wanted to deliver a durable, high-performing wheel without the price of a fancy set, so they assembled their own. Thru-axles front and rear keep both suspension elements laterally rigid, and Onza tires keep you firmly attached to the trail. They feature the Ibex tread, front and rear, with their Freeride-friendly FRC casing. The tires are in the 2.4” width.

The fork is RockShox Pike RC Solo Air 160mm. Again, think simplicity with only two adjustments, the Solo Air shock and charger damper. The 35mm stanchions, when paired with the thru-axle, are oversized, light, and stiff. Keeping with the theme, the steerer is tapered from a conventional 1 1/8" to a massive 1 1/2".

The fork is RockShox Pike RC Solo Air 160mm. Again, think simplicity with only two adjustments, the Solo Air shock and charger damper-with a handlebar-mounted remote for tuning on the fly. A dropper post is included, with 125mm of travel to get down. A Fizik Nisene XS saddle tops it off.

The Trailfox 03 X1 Bike brings the best of BMC’s trail tech down to a price everyone can love.

2017 BMC Teamelite 02 XT Mountain Bike (Teamelite 02 XT Mountain Bike)

2016 BMC Teamelite 01 XT Mountain Bike (Teamelite 01 XT Mountain Bike)

General Information

When you want all the performance of an elite World Cup-worthy soft tail frame, but aren’t quite ready to commit to the price, the BMC Teamelite 01 XT Bike is the ride that serves your purposes. It shares the frame the BMC team rides, with a carefully-curated selection of parts that keep both the weight and cost down.

The frame you should know by now. It’s at the front and off the front of the world’s toughest races. It’s a 29er that climbs nimbly, darts through singletrack, and descends with confidence. All that was fine. But the team found they wanted a little more vertical compliance for rocky, rooty stuff. They wanted the rear end softened so they could run a bit higher tire pressure to roll better over the rough stuff, and when the trail smoothes out. So the BMC engineers went to work. In two weeks, they delivered a prototype to the squad. The riders tested it out, gave their feedback, which led to further refinements. Which lead to what you see here.

They kept the geometry the same. Sort of: The small, medium, and large are the same, but an extra small and extra large were added. And there’s more, they kept most of the frame the same, with one major deviation. The way the seatstays join the frame. Rather than wrapping them directly, the stays stop before they reach the seat tube. Between the stays and seat tube, a damper now resides. This damper offers 15mm of compliance so that the rear end of the frame is constantly active. The frame comes with three dampers-they ride on two bushings that are held in place by two hex-head bolts. You can tune the ride according to your preferences.

Staying on board this Teamelite are the BMC Compliance Post, with tuned carbon flex, Fox fork, the BMC carbon flat bars, the BMC stem, DT Swiss XR1501 Spline One wheels, and Continental Race King Performance 29 x 2.2 tires. Comfort, durability, light weight, are all present. And while the wheels come tubed, they also come with all the pieces to convert them to tubeless for better traction on the trail.

BMC installed the Shimano XT group on this Teamelite. All the performance of their XTR, incrementally heavier, noticeably less flashy, and easier on the wallet. The XT derailleurs shift the XT chain over a 36/26 double ring combo and 11-40 eleven-speed cassette. The Shadow Plus rear derailleur is nearly invisible to the ground and keeps the chain close and taut while offering crisp shifts.

Shimano’s XT brakes are also the stoppers. The levers actuate hydraulic pistons that are ready to stop 160mm rotors that are designed to both shed mud and cool off as they spin. The result is predictable, consistent stopping performance regardless of the conditions.

The BMC Teamelite 01 XT Bike powers your legs on a dream-like ride that soars while still grounded in reality.

2017 BMC Fourstroke 02 Deore/SLX Mountain Bike (Fourstroke 02 Deore/SLX Mountain Bike)

General Information

The BMC Fourstroke 02 works with the innovations developed for the Fourstroke 01, with a single critical change. The rear triangle has shifted from molded carbon-fiber to welded, triple-butted aluminum. It adds about 400g of weight, while improving durability and dropping the price.

And you still get all the great features designed into the Fourstoke01. That includes a BB92 bottom bracket, for greater frame strength and less weight, an integrated, adjustable chain catcher to protect the bottom bracket, an integrated chain guide under the right chain stay to keep the chain on no matter what, a replaceable aluminum anti-chainsuck piece, a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 1/2" headset, Natural Born Post Mounts on the left seat stay have replaceable nuts, mounts are designed for 160mm rotors, but can be adjusted to take up to 185mm rotors. The headset tapers from 1 1/8" at the top to 1 1/2" below. There's a 142x12mm thru axle joining the two sides of the rear suspension for great lateral stiffness. Even the cable routing has been thought through. There are mounts for cables and brake hose underneath the down tube while there's a way to internally route a cable for adjusting your seat post.

BWC, Big Wheel Concept, is the first point of thinking. This is BMC re-considering geometry to maximize the benefits of 29ers while minimizing any negatives. And to tune it perfectly, you just sit on the bike and look down at the swingarm to find the Initial Load Indicator. Machined and painted lines on the arm that allow you to figure out where neutral is, and then tune for firm or soft.

The shocks are set up to give you 100mm of travel. They match the front and rear suspension from Fox. The dampers adjust via a knob for three different settings, Climb Trail Descend. It's an easy twist to get the right rebound, and you can change the setting in an instant.

As with the Fourstroke 01, the 02 provides continuous exterior cable routing for your shifting and braking. You’ll find it tucked under the downtube, where the housing is held in place. There is, however, internal routing for a dropper post. You also get the sag adjustment indicators on the swingarm so you have a nice visual for tuning the sag.

The BMC Fourstroke 02 is when your ambition exceeds your budget.

2017 BMC Teamelite 03 SLX/XT Mountain Bike (Teamelite 03 SLX/XT Mountain Bike)

General Information

Finding the right companion for your first cross-country adventures has gotten easy. The BMC Teamelite 03 is pining to bring the saddle for you to sling your legs over on your first rodeo.

The 03 is the fruit of BMC transferring the genius of their World-Cup Teamelite01 bike to triple-butted aluminum tubing. Aluminum is a highly-evolved metal, great for cycling. It’s durable, light and relatively inexpensive, the only limitation is manipulation. But BMC solved that problem with hydroforming. Now aluminum tubes can be put into shapes that mimic those that can be fabricated out of carbon-fiber. The benefit is that the riding characteristics can be almost as precisely tuned in al'. So with this bike, you get something that is light, stiff for power transfer and steering, and vertically compliant for smoothing out the ride.

As you see throughout the BMC line-up, the company believes in versatility. You’ve got one bike and you want it to do as much as possible, in as wide a variety of conditions as possible. This is what they were thinking with the Teamelite. It climbs well, it descends well, it handles bumps well, it rides smooth well, and it takes everything in between with equal savoir faire.

Durability should not be minimized. And aluminum makes this bike durable. Crashing can be tough on gear. But it’s a fact of life, and early on, crashing is often a constant. Embrace it. Plan for it. You need a bike that can resist rocks, and trees, as well as your most vicious sprints.

Big wheels roll better. For some manufacturers, adjusting geometry for 29ers was hard. BMC studied the problem, and nailed it. Short chainstays and low bottom bracket keep the wheel close and the weight close to the ground. The result is better power transfer and greater stability. Regardless of the direction you’re traveling, up or down, these two features are a tremendous benefit.

On the simplification front, BMC has gone for a few more common standards on the Teamelite 03. The bottom bracket is English-threaded and 73mm wide. The head tube is designed for a straight 1 1/8” steerer. And because you might be going deeper, the natural-born postmount for the rear brake is designed for 160mm rotors, though it can be set for 185mm rotors as well.

The BMC Teamelite 03 is a deal. More importantly, it rides great today, it will ride great tomorrow, and if you want to upgrade your ride, the frame will still be worthy if you choose to dress it in fancier parts.

2016 BMC Fourstroke 02 XT Mountain Bike (Fourstroke 02 XT Mountain Bike)

General Information

Smart is snazzeriffic. The BMC Fourstroke 02 29 XT Bike is flashy for those who believe that thoughtful selections matter more than brute cash. The geometry is the same as the Fourstroke 01, as is the suspension system. The two bikes even share a main triangle fabricated from carbon-fiber, though the suspension elements are shaped out of welded, triple-butted aluminum rather than molded carbon-fiber. This means you get a hefty price break on the frame for no change in performance and a little extra weight. A little more durable, too.

And you still get all the great features designed into the 01 version. That includes a BB90 bottom bracket, for greater frame strength and less weight, an integrated, adjustable chain catcher to protect the bottom bracket, an integrated chain guide under the right chain stay to keep the chain on no matter what, a replaceable aluminum anti-chainsuck piece, a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 1/2" headset, Natural Born Postmounts on the left seat stay have replaceable nuts, mounts are designed for 160mm rotors, but can be adjusted to take up to 185mm rotors.

And to tune it perfectly, you just sit on the bike and look down at the swingarm to find the Initial Load Indicator. Machined and painted lines on the arm that allow you to figure out where neutral is, and then tune for firm or soft.

The rear shock is set up to give you 100mm of travel. The Fox Float Performance Series DPS gives you three basic settings (open, medium, firm), on-the-go adjustment thanks to a handlebar-mounted remote, and extra small-bump sensitivity. The Dual Piston System makes it easy to have full lockout without losing efficiency across the settings. The fork is Fox's 32 Float Performance Series FIT4 with100mm. A handlebar-mounted remote controls the damper choices (open, medium, firm) as you ride.

Shimano XT componentry dominates the bike. The parts work great, are lightweight without being ostentatious. BMC specs a 36/26 double crank and pairs it with a 11-40 eleven-speed cassette, which is shifted by an XT Shadow low-profile rear derailleur. XT also takes care of the hydraulic disc braking, with 160mm rotors front and rear.

The wheels are DT Swiss M1700 Spline One. It's an 1855g wheelset built to ride on rocks, roots, and ruts. The aluminum rim is wide for more air and better float. Rotating weight is minimized with double-butted spokes. Engagement is near instantaneous thanks to the patented ratchet system. They have a thru-axle front, thru-axle rear. The rims are tubeless ready, though they come equipped with Continental X-King in the front and Race King in the rear, both 2.2” width. They come with tubes installed: get your goo in and go if you want tubeless.

Finishing off the bike are a suite of BMC components. BMC supplies the aluminum flat bars, low-rise short stem, and two-bolt seat post. Fizik's Tundra M7 is what holds your backside in position, with a shape specifically designed for the needs of off-road riders.

The BMC Fourstroke 02 XT combines high-tech aspirations with a sense of reality.
